Darjeeling tea is a black tea grown at the foot of the Himalayas, in the Darjeeling region of northern India. Darjeeling black tea is regarded as one of the best black teas not only in India but also in the world. Marked by its twisted downy shoots, the tea leaves range from green-chestnut to dark chestnut brown in color. Darjeeling black tea is not fully oxidized. When brewed and steeped, it gives a light-colored brew with a floral aroma. It has an astringent and a little musky flavor that gives a cooling aftertaste.
History

Tea plantation in the steeply sloping gardens of hilly Darjeeling began in 1841 by Sir Arthur Campbell, a civil surgeon of the Indian Medical Services. He was transferred to Darjeeling from Kathmandu in 1839. In 1841, he brought seeds of the Chinese tea plant popularly known as Camellia sinensis and started experimenting with tea plantation in Darjeeling. The British government established tea nurseries during the period of 1847. Later on in 1856, the Alubari tea garden was opened by the Kurseong and Darjeeling Tea Company.
